Biometrics comprises an enabling set of technologies that can help authenticate or identify individuals for such purposes as accessing physical facilities or electronic information systems, and performing criminal history or security background checks. Used in conjunction with technologies such as data encryption and smart cards as part of properly tuned systems, biometrics can play a critical role in enhancing the security and safety of our nation.
