Going Green in the Service Sector

Global warming may be the defining issue of our time. We face long-term, global challenges without straightforward solutions. Yet there are cost-eff ective steps organizations can take that will make a diff erence. Noblis’ “Operation Green” is a web-based tool that assists decision-makers to both assess and address their greenhouse gas emissions and generate reports for verification by outside third-parties. This enterprise tool allows managers to assess the impact of possible changes in business operations, energy conservation, telecommuting/conferencing, and other steps that can both reduce emissions and result in significant cost savings.

Greenhouse Gas Enterprise Model: Measuring the Carbon Footprint
Noblis Energy and Environmental Sustainability staff are assisting public and private sector organizations measure their carbon footprint. Noblis has developed a greenhouse gas (GHG) enterprise model based on the World Resources Institute Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard that complies with the International Standards Organization (ISO) 14064-1 Greenhouse Gases – Part 1: Specification with guidance at the organization level for quantification and reporting of greenhouse gas emissions and removals. Noblis also assists customers in the federal sector subject to Executive Order (EO) 13423 Strengthening Federal Environmental, Energy, and Transportation Management and believes its model can assist federal government organizations subject to the EO. The Noblis GHG enterprise model is an easy-to-use application that provides a step-by-step methodology for calculating an organization’s GHG emissions at an enterprise level. The system has several components that range from collecting and organizing data, to building a GHG inventory, to calculating return on investment, and a carbon profile mapping feature.

Noblis also functions as an independent third party to verify GHG emissions and reductions. This service will become increasingly important as “credits” earned for GHG reductions are priced and allowed to be traded in open markets in the state of California, the Northeast and elsewhere. Noblis has received preliminary clearance from the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) to be certified as a “Verification” body for confirming and assuring carbon credits for professional services organizations. The certification process is rigorous and our participation is another example of how Noblis is anticipating how we can serve current and prospective clients well into the future.
