Noblis’ Energy & Environmental Sustainability group collaborates with clients to:
  • Reduce environmental impacts
  • Increase client mission impact
  • Improve environmental resource efficiency
  • Manage and adapt to change

Noblis plays a key role in helping our Nation’s decision-makers address critical environmental and energy issues impacting America’s future. The following examples of service areas illustrate the multiple ways we provide this support and facilitation.

Environmental and Chemical Engineering/Energy Systems Services

  • Integrated environmental management strategies
  • Energy systems/chemical technologies to improve key processes
  • Water resource management and infrastructure engineering
  • Environmental monitoring design for results
  • Cost-effective, timely, protective cleanups that secure regulatory approval
  • Risk assessment to support decision making

Examples

  • Engineered and implemented sustainable approaches to water resources and water rights at military bases.
  • Devised systems to identify and evaluate early regulatory activity on environmental chemicals of concern. Aid client in managing health risks and program impacts of chemicals in current use that attract regulatory attention.
  • Evaluated environmental cleanups at over 40 military bases addressing a host of technical, regulatory, and programmatic elements. Verify cleanup goals and strategies, evaluate cleanup performance, and recommend innovative technologies. These intensive Remedial Process Optimization reviews result in increased protectiveness, earlier regulatory acceptance, and significant long-term cost avoidance.
  • Developed and refined sophisticated models of coal, waste, and natural-gas-based plants for the production of transportation fuels, electrical power, chemicals, and hydrogen. Simulated the complete performance of the proposed plants from feedstocks to refined products including estimates for construction, capital, operating costs, and project viability.
  • Identified and evaluated a host of cleanup technologies for remediating hazardous waste sites including vacuum extraction, thermal treatment, bioremediation, stabilization, carbon adsorption, air stripping, and oil-water separation.
  • Analyzed scientific literature on metabolic, toxicological, and epidemiological data on inorganic arsenic and published award-winning risk synthesis that appeared in the journal Teratology in 2000.
  • Coordinated the management of data collection and cleanup activities at a military base to address 13 contaminated groundwater zones, 20 soil gas spills, and over 300 soil removal actions. Devised path-breaking ways to coordinate remedies by combining multiple cleanup tasks into a smaller number of actions resulting in both cost-avoidance and greater public health protection.
  • Analyzed trends in groundwater data from sampling wells at a polluted site to see if mobility of underground contaminants warrants introducing a new approach designed by Noblis. This would result in 80 percent reduction in well sample collections achieving significant cost-avoidance for client, while at the same time offering the same level of monitoring of potential environmental threats.

The U.S. Air Force is aiming for 50 percent of its fuel to be synthetic by 2016, and it must also drastically reduce carbon dioxide emissions. A novel process could make both these goals a reality.

Noblis’ “Operation Green” is a web-based tool that assists decision-makers to both assess and address their greenhouse gas emissions and generate reports for verification by outside third-parties.

Toxcology/Risk Assessment

Our work in toxicology and risk assessment is directly linked to our nation’s ability to keep people safe and healthy. As such, we advocate early, proactive evaluation of potential risk issues associated with substances that find their way into our environment, medicines and food. [read more]

Environmental Restoration Program Optimization
ERP-O is a strategic effort geared towards improving Air Force environmental cleanup strategies, systems, and programs at bases across the country.  [read more]
