ICD-10 is coming--are you ready?
The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) mandated that all Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) Covered Entities must convert to the ICD-10 code set by October 1, 2013. HHS also required healthcare organizations to upgrade to the Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) Version 5010 by January 1, 2012. Version 5010 is a pre-requisite for ICD-10.
ICD-10 is a complete replacement of the ICD-9 codes used to report healthcare diagnosis and procedures. The ICD-10 transition will involve changes in people, processes, and technologies. Payers will not pay for claims improperly coded in ICD-9 after October 1, 2013. In order to receive proper payment, healthcare organizations must meet intermediate dates such as end-to-end testing completion, prior to the compliance date. End-to-end testing with business partners is essential to ensure interoperability of processes and systems and will require significant advance planning.
