Noblis developed a full-featured greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions assessment and strategic planning tool called TEAL (Total Emissions Analytics) that helps organizations assess and plan their sustainability strategies, including greenhouse gas emissions. The tool allows users to baseline GHG emissions and to track and visualize their energy consumption and GHG emissions at the enterprise or facility levels. TEAL also has a return on investment (ROI) component for analyzing investments. The resulting GHG report is consistent with The Climate Registry’s General Reporting Protocol, the World Resources Institute (WRI) and World Business Council on Sustainable Development GHG protocol, and the International Standards Organization ISO 14064-1. While TEAL is specifically developed for professional services organizations in the commercial sector, a version of the tool is also being adopted to U.S. government agencies through the U.S. General Services Administration.
The application provides a user-friendly, step-by-step methodology for calculating an organization’s GHG emissions on an enterprise level. The system collects and organizes data, builds a GHG inventory, calculates return on investment for various GHG reduction options, and maps the enterprise’s carbon profile. The tool also incorporates an interactive, real time visualization feature where the user can change the value of an energy-related parameter—such as telecommuting or core work hours—and immediately see the effect on emissions. For example, the GHG impact of increasing telecommuting by 20% will be displayed in real time. For an organization with multiple locations, the application displays all locations on a single map depicting net carbon emissions across sites using a geographic information system (GIS). The application also includes other key features such as a dashboard display, energy scenario analysis, and benchmark capabilities.
