The United States is essentially an island nation. Our commercial interests require safe navigation of the vessels that carry resources into and out of American waters and ports. Since the country's early days, the Coast and Geodetic Survey has had responsibility to survey U.S. waters and develop navigation charts. Originally charted by Thomas Jefferson, this organization evolved into what is now the National Ocean Service (NOS) within the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).
Beyond the need for accurate and reliable navigation information, researchers continue to explore the mysteries of our vast oceans. These studies make possible improved modeling for forecasting weather and navigation events, as well as shifts in the global climate. In addition, they often lead to scientific breakthroughs and enhanced public safety.
Noblis’ Center for Sustainability Mission Area supports many organizations studying ocean futures. Noblis assists the NOS and NOAA Research in finding and evaluating effective ways to carry out their responsibilities.
