Bioregulators

Bioregulators are closely related to substances normally found in the body that regulate normal biological processes. Their potential military use is similar to that of toxins. Some examples of potential applications of bioregulators are:
  • To cause pain (algogenic)
  • As an anesthetic
  • To influence blood pressure.

A specific example of a bioregulator is Substance P, which causes a rapid loss of blood pressure which may subsequently cause unconsciousness.

The Soviet Union conducted extensive research on bioregulators as biological weapons, including genetically engineering Yersinia pseudotuberculosis to produce a regulatory peptide with neurotoxic properties.
