Transportation Systems

Applying a systems thinking approach

Transportation systems are critical to our lives. Our well-being depends on traveling safely and efficiently ourselves, on the goods and services transported, and on the environmental, energy, and security impacts of vehicles and infrastructure.

Transportation is a system of systems. At Noblis, we take a systems thinking approach to help our government and industry clients solve complex transportation problems. We offer creative and practical solutions by holistically examining linkages among the elements of entire systems and assessing their direct and indirect technical, operational and societal impacts.

We apply our systems thinking approach to Intelligent Transportation Systems Programs, Aviation Telecommunications Services, and other activities to improve our transportation system. For example, we:

  • Provide full system lifecycle support for aviation technologies needed today, helping to lay the foundation for FAA’s Next Generation Air Transportation System
  • Bring extensive knowledge to investment decisions, acquisition strategies, systems engineering, and strategic planning for our nation’s air and surface transportation systems
  • Pioneer new technologies to protect travelers from bad weather and road hazards
  • Mine vast amounts of system usage data for major cities to understand traffic trends and support informed strategic decisions;
  • Work with government agencies and auto makers to develop an integrated telecommunications infrastructure that will connect vehicles and the transportation infrastructure like never before;
  • Design more efficient mass transit systems to ease congestion; and
  • Analyze the lessons learned, costs, and benefits to provide actionable solutions for our clients.

This work requires us to be trusted-partners in policy analysis, systems engineering, simulation and modeling, economic and financial analysis, and program and acquisition management. Across the board, our systems thinking approach has been essential to achieving sound and implementable solutions.

U.S. energy policy on automobile use must move beyond fuel efficiency and recognize that energy, economics, and transportation issues are tightly intertwined.

Noblis takes a systems thinking approach in helping our clients solve complex transportation problems.

Noblis Staff Present at Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) World Congress
Thirteen Noblis staff presented papers, organized technical sessions, and served on panels at the 18th World Congress on Intelligent Transport Systems.

Noblis Publishes "Applying Systems Engineering Principles to the Development of Transportation Communication Standards"
The paper, by Noblis authors by Paul Gonzalez, Jeris White, and Blake Christie,  describes how systems engineering principles were applied and the life-cycle model used to develop ITS communications standards to overcome the challenges introduced with the application of new technology. It was first written by Noblis in October of 2008 for presentation to the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE).

Sigma: Rare Events
In the September 2010 issue of Sigma, Noblis explores the concept of rare events and whether these unforeseen events can be modeled.
