Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) encompass a broad range of communications-based information and electronics technologies. They are deployed in motor vehicles and infrastructure to improve transportation safety and mobility and enhance productivity. Familiar ITS technologies include electronic toll collection, in-vehicle navigation systems, dynamic message signs, 511, and automatic collision notification.
The U.S. Department of Transportation’s ITS Joint Program Office conducts technology R&D, demonstrations, and field tests to improve the understanding and reduce the investment risks for production system development and operational deployment. Program areas include intelligent vehicles, advanced traffic and transit management, commercial vehicle operations, road-weather management, public safety, traveler information, and intermodal freight. The ITS Joint Program Office delivers technology transfer services and provides training and technical guidance for its research results.
At Noblis, we provide the ITS Joint Program Office and other federal agencies with impartial strategic and technical advice on policies, planning, acquisition, management and evaluation of R&D programs and projects. We develop traffic models and simulations, assess and test ITS technologies, and provide system engineering support.
