2010

Andrew Rak's article about the health effects of exposure to perchlorate, It’s Not Only Rocket Science, was published as the cover story for the May/June issue of The Environmental Forum

Larry Nadel was quoted in an article published in Campus Technology. In the article, Security With the Wave of a Hand, Larry states that identity fraud is a concern for many and that for wider acceptance of biometric technologies it is "incumbent on the implementers of the technology to include mechanisms and protections that minimize the likelihood of such fraudulent activity."

Todd Couts and Partrick Gerdes article, Integrating COTS Software: Lessons from a Large Healthcare Organization, appeared in the March/April issue of IT Professional. The article discussed what an orgainzation must know when choosing a COTS solution over developing a customized solution.

2009

Paul Breslin
was quoted extensively in an article published in HealthLeaders Media titled From Pac Man to Public Health: Virtual Disaster Planning Technologies in which Paul shared Noblis’ view on how interactive multiple-player gaming technology, like that employed in Noblis' HotZone game, can be used to leverage a hospital’s and its local community’s disaster preparedness training.

Paul Breslin was elected, by a vote of the membership, as a two-year term member of the Board of Directors of the Massachusetts-Rhode Island chapter of the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA). His appointment was effective June 1. The organization has over 1,300 members across Massachusetts and Rhode Island.

Noblis CTO Gil Miller and Fellow Rick Murphy were the featured authors of the ‘Smart IT’ column in the IEEE's IT Professional journal addressing Enterprise Cybersecurity. In the article titled Secure Cyberspace: Answering the Call for Intelligent Action, Miller and Murphy addressed the four goals of confidentiality, integrity, availability, and identity in the context of current and future technologies and operational practices. The article provided input to the Obama Administration's review of cyber security.

Melissa Zoepfl and Harold Korves authored an article titled, Improving Identity Discovery through Fusion, that was published in IT Professional. In the article, Zoepfl and Korves discuss why fusion—the use of multiple technologies, algorithms, or modalities in identifying or authenticating people and items—is the best approach to identity discovery accuracy.

Jon Horin led an Environmental Restoration Program Optimization review at F.E. Warren with John Anthony participating. The team encouraged the base to continue developing a decision-tree to shape their long-term monitoring strategy and questioned a groundwater model used to justify remediation at a key site based on evidence that it overestimated the scope of contamination. The team also found that relying on monitored natural attenuation may be warranted at several sites where remedial technologies are not producing cost-effective results.

Ron Porter led an Environmental Restoration Program Optimization review at Barksdale AFB. The team focused on a key site that posed challenges in terms of long-term monitoring for the base, which has a mature restoration program and is well-ahead of Air Force goals of having "remedy-in-place" at all cleanup sites by 2012.

Paul Breslin was a featured speaker at the Massachusetts Hospital Association’s third Annual Healthcare Construction Conference. Paul’s presentation was titled Is it Time for Plan B?: Why Hospitals Need to Re-Evaluate & Re-Prioritize Their Master Facility Plan. The conference was attended by nearly 100 hospital executives, architects, contractors and facility planning professionals from across Massachusetts.

Andrew Rak, Senior Principal, presented a briefing at the Society for American Military Engineers (SAME) Joint Engineer Training Conference & Expo 2009 in Salt Lake City. The briefing provided an update on the DoD's Emerging Contaminants Program, which is supported by Noblis.  After the presentation, Mr. Rak participated in a panel discussion with staff from DoD and USGS regarding a wide range of emerging issues in environmental engineering.

Dr. Ivanka Stajner completed an invited review of the National Research Council (NRC) Report on Uncertainty Management in Remote Sensing of Climate Data: Summary of a Workshop. This report calls for a closer collaboration between statisticians and earth scientists to produce geophysical datasets and uncertainty estimates in support of climate science and decision making.

Noblis Enterprise Services Director Bob Menna participated in a panel discussion at the Information Processing Interagency Conference (IPIC). IPIC is the premier forum for government leaders, industry, and academia to share ideas, challenges and successes surrounding the implementation, management and use of Information Technology. Bob addressed the challenges facing government managers in implementing the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (the "Stimulus Bill") and its unprecedented requirements for speed, transparency and effectiveness in acquisition.
