National Climate Adaptation Summit Report Released

White House report recommends broad efforts to adapt to effects of climate change.

On 29 September, a broad-based group of climate adaptation experts delivered a report requested by Dr. John P. Holdren, Assistant to the President for Science and Technology, Director of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and Co-Chair of the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology. The report  highlights seven priority actions that will help better prepare our nation for a changing climate.

The report is based on the May 2010 National Climate Adaptation Summit convened by the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy and co-sponsored by Noblis. The Summit provided useful input for planning climate research, services, and policy programs.

Dr. David Evans, Director of Noblis' Center for Sustainability, was instrumental in planning the Summit and seeing the report through to its completion. During a panel speech at the release event, Dr. Evans highlighted the need to make climate information specific to the locales and missions of organizations where they are situated. "There is a need for officially-sanctioned information at local scales that addresses the missions of organizations for them to take action," Evans said. The report includes seven high-priority, near-term actions including the development of a federal information portal, best practices, and an ongoing series of regional adaptation forums.
