Working with the U.S. Department of Energy, we have developed sophisticated models to help the nation determine the best and most cost-effective processes for generating electric power and liquid transportation fuels from coal, hydrogen, and emerging sources such as biofuels. Our research indicates that America’s vast coal reserves could be used to produce hydrogen and transportation fuels — and substitute natural gas — in quantities that would significantly reduce our dependence on imports from unstable regions. Our research also shows that if conducted carefully, the environmental impacts of transforming coal and other energy resources can be managed in an environmentally sustainable manner.
