Developing Technologies for a New Generation of Weather Satellites

Supporting NOAA on the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite - R Series (GOES- R) satellite program

In 2016 the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) will launch the Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite - R Series (GOES- R). When this next-generation weather satellite takes residence 36,000 kilometers above the earth, it will begin collecting meteorological data and transmitting it back to U.S. ground stations. Noblis has been working with NOAA to improve the ground systems technology that receives and analyzes the raw satellite data and imagery and converts it into oceanic, atmospheric, and land surface products used by the meteorological, hydrological, marine, agricultural, and transportation communities.

Much of the work Noblis is performing for NOAA is in the systems engineering, software development, telecommunications, modeling and simulation, cost management, and project management areas. We also participated in the successful critical design review that gave the green light for the GOES-R Core Ground Segment work to proceed. When GOES-R begins transmitting the data to improve our nation’s weather forecasting and help us better understand the Earth’s environment, the GOES-R ground stations and Noblis-supported technologies will be ready to receive.
